Chocolate Pecan Pie Recipe // Home is with You

 Every year for Thanksgiving, my Mom and I have always made a Chocolate Pecan Pie for dessert together. In the past few years, I've done my best to make a version that's a tad bit healthier. It's never going to be something that's good for you, it's Chocolate Pecan Pie, but with a few tweaks it doesn't have to be downright terrible for you either.

This Chocolate Pecan Pie recipe is without the nasty corn syrup that most of the recipes call for and since there are no eggs, it has less fat. You can always buy a crust if you don't feel like making one, but this homemade whole wheat crust is as healthy as they come, I found the idea for the crust here.

Crust Ingredients ≫≫
1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/8 teaspoon sea salt
7 tablespoons very cold unsalted organic butter

Filling Ingredients ≫≫
1 1/2 bananas
3/4 c water
1 3/4 c cane sugar
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 stick unsalted butter
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 c pecan pieces
1 1/2 c dark chocolate chips

For crust ≫≫

Mix together whole wheat flour with sea salt in a medium bowl. Cut in cold butter using a fork and mash together well. Add 3-5 Tbsp ice cold water, a tiny bit at a time. After mixing well, mash the dough together with your hands and form a thick disc. Cover and place in fridge for about 30 minutes.

Roll the dough out slowly and carefully. This will take time and patience, and it's ok if it doesn't look perfect, as long as it tastes good...right?

For filling ≫≫

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Mix together the bananas and water until very well blended. Add the brown sugar and salt. Melt the butter and add to the mixture. Add the vanilla extract and chocolate chips.

Place the pecans in the pie shell and pour the mixture on top, the pecans will float to the surface. Place in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Then reduce the temperature to 325°F (160°C) and bake until the center of the pie is set and no longer trembles when touched, about 65 minutes.
