Low light photography.

I’m a little late to my dear friend Jenni’sBlog Every Day in May” party, but I wanted to jump in and share my tips on low light photography. I get asked about how I light my pictures almost on a daily basis so I thought this would be a good one to share for today’s prompt.

Since my husband's a musician, I end up taking a lot of pictures in places with not much light available, so I had to learn very quickly how to get around this. Now that I’m a natural light photographer, knowing how to light in any situation (especially the tough ones) is extremely important.

Here are my tips:

≫≫ Don’t use the flash! If you absolutely have to, do it, but I don't recommend using it- especially the flash that came on your camera. Done correctly flash can be used beautifully; but assuming we don't have all that fancy gear and experience using flash the right way, practice getting the shot without it.

≫≫ Watch your ISO. Shooting in low lighting will cause you to bump up your ISO in order to get a faster shutter speed. Make sure not to crank it up too high or you'll start to get very grainy pictures. How high you can go before you start to see any grain will differ from camera to camera, so practice different ISO's with your camera to see where the cut-off point is. And just like with flash, grain done right can add drama to a picture, but not in every picture.

≫≫ Find the light. Even the most dimly lit places have light coming from somewhere, so do your best to find it and use it to your advantage. If you're shooting outside at sunset don't be afraid to shoot into the sun. If you’re inside, find a window or other light source.

≫≫ Get down girl, go ‘head, get down. (Kanye anyone?) Seriously though, often when you’re outside and the sun is sinking low, it’s best to get down (squat, lay, whatever) to get more light in your image. This is especially helpful if you’re shooting something that’s also down low, like a pretty flower.

I hope you've found these tips helpful, and if you're stopping by from Story of my Life please be sure to say hi and introduce yourself!

The great thaw...

Today I couldn't help but take a million pictures of the gorgeous trees and flowers as they thawed from the freak ice storm that hit Wichita this week. Even for Kansas, it was the strangest day when it went from 75 degrees and humid out to sleeting and waking up to an ice covered city. Either way, it was a photographer's dream today as things warmed back up and the trees dripped of ice and sparkled in the sunshine...

Traveling Photographer // Trip Update

Traveling Photographer // Home is with You

Before I get into some posts full of pictures with everything we've been up to lately I wanted to do a quick trip update. Currently we're staying at my in-laws in Knoxville, TN for one more week. I'm already booked up with photo sessions while we're here.

When we leave here we'll be headed to the Fort Knox, KY area, if you're near there and would like to get in on the special I'm offering as we're on the road, email me! I know our time there will fill up quickly so it would benefit you to get in touch with me soon if you're interested. We'll be in town from about January 7th-16th.

We'll be in our new home of Winston-Salem, NC by January 21st! We are anxious and excited to get to our new town and find a place to live. I know some people think we're crazy because we don't have a place lined up yet, but we like getting to check places out in person instead of picking something out on Craigslist.

I'll be continuing the special on photo sessions for the first few people that contact me in our new area of North Carolina! This will only apply to the first 5 people that email me about a session, so don't wait to contact me if you're interested.

I appreciate your patience as we're traveling and in and out of internet connection. Once we get to KY I should have internet from then on and now that I'm not as sick I can make it to a coffee shop with internet here in Knoxville. I just adore reading each and every comment and really appreciate you all sticking with me through this crazy time.

One last little order of business is sponsor spots. I have spots open in January and would absolutely LOVE to have you! You can grab a spot here.

Finding joy in the simple things...

Oh to have the innocence of a child, where the world is your playground. So many of us lose that sense of wonder as we get older, it's sad really. The world is such a beautiful place and I find so much inspiration being outside and exploring...

The Hejl Family.

It was such a pleasure to get to photograph Alys, Ryan, and itty bitty Bryant. The three of them are such a precious family...Bryant is only a few months old and such a little sweetheart.

And Alys wrote the most wonderful testimonial, I teared up when I read it. This is exactly what I'm all about...

"My husband and I had so much fun with Mallorie during our photo shoot. It was obvious that she was well prepared and had came out the day before and scoped out awesome places for us to take photos. I loved talking with her and getting to know her. It wasn't the typical photo shoot where the photographer tells you to pose this way and that way and sit over here, instead it was a very personal experience. Getting to know more about Mallorie really made the photo shoot worth it. I loved the places that she had us take pictures. I have had quite a few photo shoots in the past 2 years due to getting married and pregnancy and this by far was my favorite. I loved that Mallorie already had ideas in mind as to what we were going to do and captured us in the moment. She let us smile when we wanted to smile and did not get frustrated when we were talking in the middle of a shot. She went with what we were doing and this made our photos really come to life. I will look back on these pictures and will always cherish them. This was our first photo shoot as a family of three and it was the best I have had yet. I would recommend Mallorie to anyone and love her photography!" ~Alys Hejl

CreativeLive.

I don't know if any of you are photographers or aspiring photographers...or maybe you just love to take pretty pictures. I recently found the website CreativeLive (thanks to one of Dave and I's friends) and I can't get enough! They have workshops that you can pay to get a copy of or you can watch it live and just take notes like a mad woman/man. I do the later.

Their workshops are amazing and full of wonderful information by some of the top photographers in the business. I know I've already learned a lot and can't wait for what's next! I highly recommend checking it out if you are serious about learning more.

You can watch the videos live here.

*PS~ I was not contacted by CreativeLive to do this post, I just really love what they're doing!

The perfect light.

There is a place by our apartments that Dave and I ran recently and you all might remember that I talked about going back with my camera, well I finally did! I decided yesterday morning that I was going to walk over there before sunset and take some pictures, but of course pesky life got in the way and Dave and I ate later than expected...by the time we were done with dinner it was the perfect lighting out...

Oh what we photographers/wanna-be-photographers would do for the perfect light...just about anything. So instead of walking over there (like I had planned) I told Dave to grab the keys because I needed to go NOW. Luckily I have a wonderful husband who understands my breed of crazy so he did what I said and we ran out the door...

He parked when we found a good spot and I sprinted across the street (kids- don't try this at home). As soon as I set foot on the grass at the other side I realized...the field of flowers that I wanted to photograph was surrounded by thorn bushes...and I was in sandals and shorts. Oops. But, what's a little suffering for your art, right? Right...
